October Desert- 4:00am

By Brian Gaunt

No moon. The deepest midnight blue imaginable. The Milky Way spilled across my sky. Stars so big they make shadows.
A hint of light, low to the northeast. Heaven going cobalt blue. Mountains begin to show their shape.
The air  is crystal. So clear and clean, breathing is like a drink of ice-water on a 105 degree day.
A crimson band expands over the horizon. Snow drapes the mountain rim flanks, ready to reflect the morning colors. Salmon pink and gold.
A snow-melt stream meanders towards me, tumbling and talking through sage of the desert.
And the Sun rolls right up side the Steens Mountains lighting the high plateau.
I wonder….who saw all this before me?
